Topic: Driving ability

A lack of fitness to drive has a direct impact on everyone's safety: Drivers and passengers, emergency services, construction workers and ASFINAG employees.

Initial situation

Various influencing factors such as alcohol, drugs, medication, fatigue or dehydration can impair fitness to drive. Age and state of health can also affect fitness to drive. In addition to checks, it is also important to create an awareness of your own fitness to drive or its impairment by providing comprehensive information.

Driving under the influence is not a trivial offense

Impaired drivers not only endanger themselves, but also their passengers and all other road users.

Self-assessment and problem awareness

Under the influence of alcohol or drugs, many drivers misjudge their fitness to drive. It is also difficult to objectively assess age-related limitations.

Goal levels

We do not want any injuries or fatalities due to impaired or unfit drivers on Austria's highways and expressways.

  • Ensuring or increasing the fitness to drive of all road users
  • Creating acceptance through comprehensive, intensive information and awareness-raising

ASFINAG promotes information and checks on fitness to drive to encourage self-assessment and awareness of the rules. Existing information channels and partnerships are used for this purpose.

Expectations till 2030

In view of the numerous collisions caused by impaired drivers, our goal is to reduce the number of accidents caused by a lack of fitness to drive
and accident costs caused by unfit drivers.
