Topic: Event management
Accidents and other incidents will always happen. We work in such a way that these cause as little suffering as possible and the disruptions are quickly rectified!Initial situation
The number of incidents is increasing:
- more traffic and more traffic jams
- Relatively many secondary and rear-end collisions
Every incident/accident is different:
- different route characteristics
- different types of people involved in accidents
- many different responsible emergency organizations
- Different communication channels between the emergency services
- Prompt provision of relevant traffic information for customers
The framework conditions are changing:
- increasing amount of incident information
- Road and vehicle infrastructure with different technical standards
- Different levels of information for emergency services and new channels

Incident management at the scene of an accident is an essential part of post-accident care and accident prevention and makes a significant contribution to road safety.
Accidents are not entirely avoidable. We at ASFINAG have set ourselves the goal of actively handling incidents in the best possible way and avoiding subsequent incidents. We support and supplement the work of the emergency organizations involved.
- Active and rapid restoration of normal conditions
- Rapid and consistent dissemination of information (internally and externally)
- Upgrading and expansion of task profiles (increasing competencies, taking an active role) to ensure uniform and optimal procedures
- Active support of the sovereign incident command (authority/police) and optimal cooperation with operational/authority staffs
Expectations up to 2030
Traffic volumes and diversity are constantly increasing. We monitor developments and continuously adapt our processes.
We provide precise information on events in a timely manner. The latest developments in technology are actively used for this purpose.
Good coordination between the emergency response organizations helps to minimize the consequences of accidents.
ASFINAG employees assume additional responsibility for promoting the cooperation of all parties involved.
Focus of action
- Networking vehicle - infrastructure
Targeted transmission of information to vehicles approaching danger zones. Better assessment of the situation through the use of vehicle information - Faster incident handling
Clear competencies and prepared communication rules and measures shorten incident processing and accelerate the fastest possible clearance of the route - Safeguarding the end of traffic jams
Timely warning of traffic jams with stationary or mobile warning systems and targeted work processes
Networking of BMI - ASFINAG operations control systems, e-call connection - Short response times and more effective incident handling thanks to the same level of information and less data processing effort
- Expansion of the Traffic Manager areas of application
New: also in Salzburg since June 2021; Traffic Manager planned for Graz
Operational exercises in tunnels and open areas - Training of current and future operational scenarios with fire department, police and ASFINAG emergency services in the “Zentrum am Berg” (training tunnel managed by Montanuniversität Leoben) and at potentially real outdoor locations
